You’re very diverse in the Wellness Industry with titles ranging from Certified Holistic Health Practitioner, Certified Life Coach, Certified Lifestyle Educator, Certified Energy Leadership Master Practitioner, and Eating Psychology and Mind-Body Nutrition Expert. What inspired you to start Thriving Lifestyle?
As fancy as these titles can appear, I must say that the most valuable training I’ve received was through my own personal journey of self-discovery and overcoming an eating disorder. Transforming my own life and relationship with myself was really the inspiration. In fact, I now see the eating disorder as a blessing rather than something awful that I should feel shameful about. I learned that my bulimia was just a symptom of something deeper going on that was screaming for my attention. It allowed me to discover how disconnected I was from my true self and that for most of my life, I depended on others to make me feel secure and good about myself. As a result, I became really skilled at people pleasing and being liked. Deep down, my biggest fear was being judged and not accepted.
During my healing journey, I ended up seeking support from many experts and practitioners, both conventional and unconventional. It was through the introduction to holistic nutrition and working with a Life/Spiritual Coach that helped me to heal and transform my life. Naturally, I became passionate about helping others create a healthy relationship with food and foster self-love and self-awareness, which is how my company was born.
That’s amazing you were able to create something unique to help others throughout your journey Karla. Your focus is on overall Holistic Health so catering to your mind, body and soul as a whole as opposed to just focusing on food. What does Holistic Living mean to you and how has it changed you?
To me, Holistic Living is having the awareness that all areas of your life are connected and looking at how all of these parts affect the whole. For example, if you’re having relationship challenges, chances are that other areas of your life will be affected too. Some people may end up overeating to help cope with the emotional stress or lose motivation to exercise. Holistic Living is also about honoring the fact that we’re “whole beings” rather than having a fragmented perception, which tends to make us feel disconnected and “broken”.
I know from discovering this you really dove into the learning process of Holistic Nutrition. Tell us a bit about how you decided to turn your personal discovery into the learning aspect?
After being introduced to Holistic Nutrition by my Chiropractor while still living in Toronto, I was immediately drawn to wanting to learn more. At the time, he was teaching at CCNM (Canadian College of Naturopathic Medicine) and informed me that they offer classes on Holistic Nutrition. I immediately signed up, and I loved every minute of the experience. Seeing food as something more than just calories and nutrients felt so empowering and liberating to me. Plus, the mind and body approach made total sense.
Through my Chiropractor, I also met my Life/Spiritual Coach. She played an instrumental role in helping me connect and embrace my true self and to realize that all that I needed to overcome my eating disorder was already within me.
As a result of my passion for Holistic Nutrition and first hand experience of the transformational benefits that Life Coaching can offer, I decided to go back to school to get formally trained as a Holistic Health Practitioner and a few years later, as a Life Coach.
When I first started my business, I was mainly focusing on nutrition with my clients. However, it was frustrating, since I could only help them get so far. Regardless of what the nutritional challenge is that someone has, it’s never really just about the food. By integrating Life Coaching with Holistic Nutrition, my clients have been able to experience quicker and more transformational results that they’re able to sustain.
I love how everything just tied together so nicely! You said that the results your clients now experience are quicker, what types of transformations have you seen within these women?
Besides the Health and Wellness transformations that they typically experience, the type of transformation I’m really talking about is the kind that comes from the inside out. It’s this sense of peace and vitality that they radiate from reconnecting with and honouring their most authentic self. Their self-confidence; self-worth tends to dramatically increase. Many even look physically different (often more youthful!) just from the glow that they have.
It’s quite an intimate relationship that I have with my clients, and it’s so rewarding to be able to witness them transform before my very eyes.
Tell me about your services. What are you about and how do you serve your clients?
My approach is all about honoring my client’s individuality. Therefore, the one-on-one coaching program that I offer is custom designed. My whole approach is “from the inside out," rather than seeing clients as “broken," I see and treat them as “whole” beings. I help them realize that whatever challenges they have are simply powerful messengers of something deeper that is calling their attention. I help them gain self-trust so that they can reconnect with their body wisdom and relax more in life. Plus, I’m a big believer that their journey should be fun and pleasurable! I never give them action items that they’ll dread or feel like they “have to do” instead of what they “want to do." It’s always about honouring their agenda, and the relationship we have is more like a collaborative partnership.
You have a community called Thriving Women Connect. Tell us about this and how was this community created?
I’m very excited about Thriving Women Connect! This is my passion project! My vision is to help women all over the world gain self-awareness and foster self-love through connecting with themselves as well as with other like-minded women.
All members of my free community are invited to partake in a monthly challenge that I announce every first of the month through my e-newsletter. They have the entire month to implement the proposed action item, which is typically related to wellness, self-care and self-development. I also created a private Facebook group where the women are encouraged to post and support each other. I made it private so that it can be a safe place where they can freely share their challenges and successes. My web designer and I are currently working on a creating a website just for this community, which will include tons of resources to further support the women. Very excited for this so stay tuned!
Check out Karla's Challenge of the Month below!
That's amazing of you to start up! I think it's important to have positive people around for support so the private group is great. Now, in your introduction video to “Thriving Women Connect” you talk about true confidence and happiness. What is true confidence and how do we create happiness from within?
Creating happiness from within is the understanding that no one but YOU can truly make you happy. Happiness is a choice in how you see your world. Collectively as a society, we’ve been conditioned to look for happiness outside of ourselves. We tend to depend on others and our outer circumstances to make us feel happy. That’s not sustainable happiness, since it’s impossible to have full control of anything or anyone but ourselves. This approach causes us to constantly feel hungry for happiness or fear losing it since we never know how long it’s going to last.
I teach my clients that when they can learn to take responsibility for the power that they have to choose their thoughts which ends up creating their emotions. This is when sustainable happiness becomes accessible. It involves a lot of commitment and inner work, however, the benefits are priceless.
You really couldn’t have said it better! If you’re happy and you know it clap your hands! [Laughs] This seems to be a common theme in relationships, always looking to the other for joy. What Is your take on this and advice to give for those who want a fulfilled and happy partnership?
The first step is to view and acknowledge yourself and your significant other as whole beings. Let go of any belief that someone else can make you feel more “complete” or is your “other/better half”. Also, it’s really not fair to place your happiness in someone else’s hands. That’s a huge responsibility and a lot of pressure for the other person to fulfill. When both individuals can learn to take responsibility for their own happiness, a truly thriving relationship can foster. Plus, as a result of all of this, you release the fear of “losing” a part of yourself.
Wow, that's like music to my ears Karla. This interview has been a pleasure and I know our readers have gotten fabulous tips and insight of how to live a Thriving Lifestyle. Thank you so much for taking the time to chat with me!

Lisa, you offer many different types of packages including group fashion shopping trips, style services and what seems to be coming soon in makeup. Do you have a favourite and what do you like about each?
Thursday, May 17th 11am to 2pm is the next shopping date! Click for deets!
That’s right I have four basic style services. I created the packages because there are people who don’t really know where to start but they want an experience with a Stylist. The group packages are the exact same service and I offer discounts when you sign on for more than one trip. The group trips are great! My clients get to go out and have fun with their friends, get a taste of my services and what it’s like working with a Stylist. There isn’t as much individual attention but you still get tips along the way and I take you to places that are a little more off the beaten path so it isn’t your typical mall shopping experience – it’s all very unique. I have clients who book as an entire group of friends for a girly time out or you can sign up individually and make new friends. It’s a reduced rate to my 3 hour service. Some get nervous about having a Stylist with them by themselves, so it’s a great way for me to show them cool new places and they can test me out, it’s less risky. Seems like a lot of fun, I’ll have to book one in for myself soon! So tell me about your makeup services? Sure! I’ve had lots of clients ask about if I do makeup too since they go hand in hand. The whole look isn’t really complete without the makeup basics so I went back and took some training. I now do little mini makeup sessions where I show my clients how to do basics for day and evening and we shop for new products on our trips too. Since I’m not affiliated with the products and purely using them because I think they’re great, my clients tend to trust my recommendations a lot more.
You’re a colour expert? What do you enjoy most when playing around with colourful pieces and do you have favourite colours you always work with?
Book a Colour Party and find our which makes you sparkle!
I’m trained in colour analysis and my job is to figure out the clients’ best colours. I try to not be too predictable so I like to pair up items that people wouldn’t necessarily think to go together. I always look at patterns for inspiration. An example would be a patterned skirt like a plaid or a floral. For the top, I'd pick from the array of colours in the pattern - there are lots of colours mixed in patterns and you can see that they go together so to think that they wouldn't go together as solids doesn't make sense.
Once you get the hang of it, it becomes simple. You just pick up a certain pattern and think "What can I pair this with?"
You grew up with a single Mom and I know it taught you how to make the most of things you had and shop on a budget. What tools do you think you gained that you brought into your business?
With being raised by a single Mom shopping was never a luxury - it had to be really thought out and planned. Every new season it was all about figuring out "What are my staples clothing pieces for this season?" I’d make a clothing list and I would read Seventeen magazine for inspiration. Before my trip I’d research and price all of my must haves then I’d mix and match pieces from different stores to keep to the budget. All of my must haves I’d put on my list I wanted so bad, so I found a way to get them. I guess I’ve just always grown up that way so I still use those practices - I see what’s available where and I’m a bit of a stickler. That’s very crafty of you! Hey if you can find it for less why not! I know you have pieces that you will spend a pretty penny for. What are they? I spend money on pieces of clothing for the hardest to fit body area. For most of us women it’s our bottom half so pants, skirts and jeans. I find with expensive jeans they hold their shape longer. There is however a fine line between a quality jean and spending too much! You have your premium pricing because it’s a great fit and wash then there’s the logo premium brands where that’s all you’re paying for. I find anything over $400 is too much and that’s when it’s all about the label. Some of my favourites are J Brand, Citizens of Humanity and Yoga Jeans.
I know you’re big on spending more money on clothing as opposed to, buying “cheap” things. Where do you get quality items for less?
Oh there are lots of places! Winners is a good start or Marshalls. Holt Renfrew Last Call is amazing too! Any sort of outlet mall like Vaughan Mills is great too. I like getting well made pieces for less so I go for the names and brands for quality, but don’t always want to pay for the high ticket pricing that comes with it.
Okay so I’m a big fan of “What Not to Wear” and I’m sure you knew this question was coming, What was it like to be trained by THE Stacy London? How did that come about?
Of course! I actually just saw something online about Stacey starting a new network of Stylists being personally recommended by her and if you wanted to get more information, to sign up on the website. I did just that. I sent an email and forgot about it. I got a call a couple months later from her reps inviting me to take training with her in New York for the weekend! I was one of two chosen Canadians and it was for established Stylists only! Stacy added her flare and what she knows best in style and image consulting and working with clients in that industry. We learned about tailoring, and doing wardrobe audits with clients. She is pretty much exactly like she is on her show - brutally honest and if you say something she disagrees with, she let’s you know! She doesn’t hold any punches that’s for sure. It was a great experience! Our industry tends to be isolated and competitive which I try not to be, so it was really nice to share ideas and learn from other people and get Stacey’s experience in what she’s done over the years. I learned a lot about tailoring which was nice. I find that women think everything should fit right off the rack and that isn’t always the case. We blame ourselves instead of the clothing and try to make it fit, that’s where tailoring comes in!
What is most rewarding for you when you transform your clients’ wardrobe to one that compliments all they are?
What’s most rewarding would be when I get people I’ve worked with calling me back and they want me to come do something with them again. This let’s me know I’m doing something right and it feels amazing! When people tell me they can take a step back from what I’ve shown them and really love what they’re in, that makes me feel great too. With a Shape & Style Session my clients can relax more; they can feel good about themselves and okay knowing they don’t have to fit into some kind of "norm." I also love when I hear “Wow I do look cute in this” and “I can wear this!” I push them outside of their comfort zone and then they do feel like “oh yeah I can do that.” There are exceptions to every rule and I show them how to make something work that they are dying to wear but just don’t know how. I make it fun and I’ve always loved it!
What’s your definition of someone who is fashionable?
Fashionable to me is someone who knows themselves well enough to know what trends work for them. They take the three most important factors of style into consideration – their lifestyle, body shape, and personality. I think the word trendy has gotten a bad rap. It’s important to be current because it shows you care about yourself but know what’s appropriate for you and what’s not. A quick example is giant wedges this season. Well, you wouldn’t be wearing these if you’re a mom running around with your kids all day - it doesn’t fit your lifestyle. Know what works for you and your lifestyle. That to me is the epitome of someone who is fashionable. Ah yes love the wedges this season! Thank goodness I’m kid free so they’re still good for me!
How about we close with a few tips? What tips would you give anyone who wants to change their clothing choices today but doesn’t quite know where to start and is on a budget?
First find a colour that excites you that you don’t have in your wardrobe. You can start small – a scarf or jewelry pieces. Accessories are the easiest way to spice up your wardrobe without making a big investment. Women get nervous about how they look to other people so the safest way is with accessories that play on a current trend. This is also more affordable and it makes a huge statement. Make sure it isn’t matchy matchy, it just has to go. Also, start thinking that your clothes should work for you, you don’t have to work for the clothes. Sometimes alternations are all you need. A strap made shorter, take in the side of shirt for better body shape definition. This makes clothes look like their perfect for your body with simple little tweaks and can make a whole new statement for you!

This past weekend DivaGirl had the pleasure of gracing the Top Model Live Conference bringing fun, flare and lots of pink in the mix! Amongst all of the fabulous vendors bringing you the latest in fashion and beauty trends there were an ample amount of gorgeous women strutting their stuff in sky high stilettos, sexy high fashion pieces owning the pink carpet like it's their time to shine on the catwalk, meow! The perfect spot for Divas!
Argos Girls love DivaGirl!
French Connection Fashion Stage
We shared space with our friends at Inspired Cosmetics which made for an exciting experience! Not only were they giving all Top Model Live guests fabulous beauty makeovers, sharing what's hot for the season they also had Toronto Argos Cheerleaders engaging the crowd with their cheers, wide smiles and dance moves! Our male friends entertained while Inspire pampered and dolled up the ladies - it's a win/win! Lots of guests were coming by snapping pics and having a good time learning about all of the amazing cosmetics from very knowledgable and friendly Inspire beauty experts. My personal fav is their nude lipsticks. We love our friends at Inspire!
We also had the French Connection Fashion Stage right beside us so throughout all the fun we were able to listen in on what's hot this season by the fashion experts themselves. We got the skinny on how to wear coloured skinnies, sequened shorts, silky blouses, lip colour brights and much more! A few top fashion bloggers were on the stage like Jay Strut which was a real treat! The outfits and pieces were more enticing then the next and the hosts kept the crowd engaged and interested. If I didn't shop at French Connection before I totally am now!
The weekend was a blast! We met so many amazing people to bring into our community, learned a bunch on the fashion world and were surrounded by beautiful people, what more can you ask for out of a weekend right? DivaGirl is taking the fashion world by storm, watch out! ;)
If you love our Titika Line worn by our DivaGirls below check out our DivaGirl Boutique and be sure to check out Inspire Cosmetics Facebook page!
In it you talk about becoming very ill which is how you found your purpose in the healing arts. Can you share what that was like for you? Travelling along a path that wasn’t your own and then finding the right course?
I knew I wanted to do something that involved health and the mind. I’ve always been mesmerized by the human mind it’s so complex. Now I love how our belief systems affect our body, it’s so powerful the mind can do good things and bad things. When I got sick I was angry, I was angry at the medical field. I was a runner training for the Olympics and I couldn’t walk to class let alone run. I was depressed you can’t just cut people up expecting to eventually find the answer but I think I needed that to know there are many other forms out there for me. There was a lot of anger that led me towards that transition. Covering up symptoms not the cause, and essentially putting a Band-Aid on the problem instead of fixing it was a big part that led me to alternative therapy. Now I get to be creative in how to make my job.
What do you do to stay healthy and balanced? Do you have a specific daily routine that incorporates both? I start every morning with meditation which includes a mantra given to me by a guru - a couple words in Indian. I repeat that and connect a source through that. I balance and harmonize my chakras and energy treatment. I also make sure to surround myself with people who inspire me and who we can be silly and laugh and be kids. I think it’s really important for us not to take ourselves so seriously. My boyfriend and I are apart from each other right now and we make silly videos and in the last one I just laughed and laughed! So much so I fell off my chair! It’s important to laugh and have fun.
Too cute Channa! I agree it’s important to stay balanced but do you ever feel like your days are just too busy and you’re thrown off? Yes, sometimes I do feel like I’m not nurturing all parts and I forget to take time for myself, I call it hurry sickness. We’re always in a rush to get things done but we do need to be aware and make it a priority to take time for ourselves. I too fall victim to it sometimes and I need to check myself. What I do and recommend is to write motivational lists of what I learned today and what did I love today. You’re able to self reflect and make a plan of what to do the next day – “I would love tomorrow to take a nice walk on the beach .” Even if you have to write it out in your agenda, you’ll be way more efficient.
When did you decide you wanted to start publishing books? How did you come up with the ideas for “Divine in 9” and “12 Weeks to Raw-some” – love the play on the word awesome by the way. I’ve been a book worm all my life, writing a book just seemed like the most natural step. 12 weeks to Raw-some was a great way to teach myself the ropes of self publishing while giving women a guideline to achieve optimal health; mind, body and soul. My book from here on out will be a very different format, in fact, my boyfriend Paul and I are writing a series of spiritual/mystical children’s books presently and as I step away from the world of fitness competing, my focus will be more on spirituality, that’s where my heart is. People I look to for inspiration are all Hay House Published Authors and I dream of being among them one day.
That’s amazing! I look forward to your series. What Hay House Authors have inspired you most and what have you gotten out of their work? I love so many hay house authors! Doreen Virtue reminds me of the angels always with me, Silvia Browne for educating on the next life, Wayne Dyer for telling it like it is, Gabrielle Bernstein for bringing the hip into spirituality and reminding me to shine and that's its ok to wave my spirit junkie flag (as she smiles)
Do you think that anyone can go raw? What do you say to people who feel as though they need meat but aren’t necessarily happy with their health? I think everyone should have 1 raw meal a day. It’s very important to make sure we are getting the nutrients and enzymes available to us in raw food as well as eating them because they are high in vibration - making us vibrate higher, when we are high vibrational beings, we are able to manifest more light, gifts and magic into our lives. All of us are created differently so I don’t recommend 100% raw to everyone. I personally eat a macro-biotic diet, 80% raw food, I cook my quinoa, sweet pot, steel cut oats and beans (black and garbanzo)
I recommend to anyone who is not satisfied with their health to be open to different approaches. You can fix a problem with the same method that created the problem. Get your study on and read about different nutrition programs and see what personally resonates with you.
Have you experienced nay sayers on your raw diet? Naysayers…Oh Yes!! Especially trainers and peeps in the gym. One gym owner found out I was vegan and said “but she looks so healthy, she’s one of the most fit in the gym!” He has the belief system that vegans are weak, unhealthy (as she laughs) I was told when I competed that I was crazy to think I could do it as a raw vegan. I believe people are simply scared of what they don’t know. I know my truth, I’ve learned to become aloof to the opinions of others, they don’t matter, all that matters is that I lead my life with good intentions and that I stay true to what I believe my path in life to be and hopefully inspire wellness along the way.
You sign off with “Love and Light” which is so simple and beautiful for someone to read. What does that mean to you? Love and Light is what we are. We are spiritual beings living a human experience, we are light beings, we are love, it is our essence (as she smiles)
Channa thanks so much for sitting down with me. You’ve opened up a new world for a lot of our readers on the healing arts and a delight to chat with.
