How did you decide to choose entrepreneurship?
I consider being an entrepreneur as not what I do, it’s what I am. I’ve always been someone who creates something out of nothing or someone who takes something that was pre-existing and makes it something different. This is what being an entrepreneur is to me – It’s creating innovative ideas that have yet to be thought up or making ideas that much better. I guess the idea building has always been natural to me. I’ve always been creative and went against the norm. I remember as a kid I was always writing, and looking to forge roads and not necessarily playing in between the lines. (As she laughs) It sounds so silly to me now but I put groups together to make a difference like the Environment Club. We actually did a lot of good like cleaned up a park, organized a fundraiser for the Wildlife Foundation. Any jobs I had I was always trying to be very innovative – creating new divisions, products, and new ways of going about something. I was always the one who was outspoken, stayed later, did more work. This is how I got ahead and I always knew somewhere inside of me that I was meant to be independent.
You have an amazing workshop coming up this Wednesday April 18 and it’s all about how you Started Ohhh while working at your corporate job. What was that like for you?
It was crazy!! I was busy all the time and had no time to do anything but work and build my business. Don’t get me wrong I love it but it’s not easy or glamorous. I knew that I didn’t want to take any funding from the bank so I created an alternative.
My typical day consisted of getting up at 8am (which is super late going into work for 9ish) I’d work at my office until about 6 pm or 7 pm and then work my ass off on my freelance projects. This I’d do until about 11 pm and then after that I would start up with Ohhh. My normal crash time was 2 am and there would be times I was running on 4 hours sleep or less. The greatest intensity of this routine was for about 5 months but I knew there was a light at the end of the tunnel so I kept going.
Also, I couldn’t be myself at work anymore so that was a huge driving force that made this intense schedule doable for me. I don’t have an issue with authority but I’m much more conducive and happier being my own boss. I don’t deal well with having a very static schedule because for me I love to work and I leverage that. I was over the traditional cubicle air of working where it’s not okay to go home sick for the day but you can sit at your desk not being productive – that never made sense to me. You also can’t take risks to the extent that I would want to and now I don’t have to answer to anyone but myself for the most part. Actually I think the highlight of doing all of this would have to be my older brother telling me how proud he is of me that I made my own life, he called me his hero. He's now going to be an entrepreneur by the looks of it and I helped inspire him so it makes me feel good.

You mentioned in your podcast “Kat Loves Sex Episode 2: A Day In the Life” that you’ve always been interested in Sex Positive Culture. What fascinates you most about it?
I think being sex positive is someone who is interested in all facets. I’m really interested in people who are abstinent in their culture for example. The topic really interests me in everything across the spectrum.
I remember in the 9th grade I did a speech on homosexuality to a very preppy and conservative background of students including my teacher. I didn’t do it for strike value but because I was genuinely into the topic. I don’t even remember what my audiences reaction was I felt like I was in my own world all throughout my high school years. I wasn’t very social because I had a whole life outside of school. I’m sure there was some type of reaction but I didn’t pay it attention.
Sex is so important in our society and its an appetite that we deny. We talk about sex with embarrassment and act like it’s a taboo and I think its really damaging like the stories that we tell young girls. I always want others to feel good about themselves. There is no need to tell all the details, we don’t need to share all of that but we make things so over the top. This shuts people off to a part of their life that is so natural and needed.

How did you decide to incorporate your love for helping people express their sexuality into a successful business?
It came organically. It was a given, there wasn’t a lot of ideation. I was totally prepared to fail too. Starting a business is hard and I thought no matter what I do there would be a chance it didn’t work so I thought that if Ohhh didn’t work out I would scratch it and start something up again. Sex was the first one that came to mind because I’m passionate about it and thought it was a good place to start. If you were to ask some of my friends they would say “Of course she did!” I was always the go to educator. Extended families were probably the only ones that were kind of surprised.
Okay so a bit off topic but I’m curious – what is your favourite sex toy product you carry and why?
That’s a really tough one! Honestly I’ve tried close to everything and we just have so many products to choose from it’s hard to say! That’s actually a really hard question! (Sits and thinks hard for a bit)
(After deep thought) Okay I have them picked! My first is the Liberator Black Label Wedge. It’s a foam pillow shaped like a wedge and its high density foam sex position pillow. It comes with awesome animal print and a blindfold. The brand is very luxurious and feels really good to own something like it. You can use it for romantic sex, sexy sex, whatever pleases you! You’ll never be falling over from experimental positions again. It’s amazing and keeps you in place. I could fall asleep in it. It also comes with a carrying case and it’s really easy to wash just throw covers in the machine.

My second favourite is the entire Booty Parlour Line specifically the Kissaholic Lip Gloss (which she is wearing as we speak - yep they're plump) I have every colour and flavour. They are aphrodisiac infused, taste really good, lots of different colours, it’s glossy and plumping. Your lovers will want to kiss you with this on I promise!
What’s one big perk about owning your own sex toy business?
I always have really amazing sexy beauty products and I’m always wearing really sexy lingerie. I could be in sweat pants and I’m still wearing the sexiest lingerie. I’m also always burning massage oil candles, dark vanilla or something decadent so my condo always smells really good.
Since you're always in hot lingerie, what are you wearing right now?
Oh good question, what do I have on? (does a quick peek then show and tell) It's a Mad Men style, naughty secretary lacey bra. I really love it! It's actually called the Black and Baby Pink Bra.
